#FishTok: The Official Archive & Movement History
Share
#FishTok is Australia’s modern youth fishing movement - a nationwide cultural shift that transformed recreational angling from a declining hobby into a vibrant, digital-native subculture for a new generation.
It blends real outdoor life, high energy live broadcasting, suburban jetty culture, and youth storytelling, creating a space where fishing feels alive, social, and modern.
#FishTok isn’t a trend. It is a documented cultural movement.
The Origin & Cultural Shift
Before #FishTok, youth participation in Australian recreational fishing had been in a decade-long decline. Traditional fishing media relied on slow-paced tutorials, boat-owner demographics, and corporate gear reviews that failed to resonate with digital-native teenagers.
In response, Peter Phung (“Shroom”) pioneered a new format: real-time interactive field broadcasts, suburban fishing adventures, and relatable, high-energy storytelling. Kids didn't just watch, they picked up rods, headed to local jetties, and built active communities.
"The hashtag #FishTok emerged organically as young anglers began sharing their experiences online. But the movement itself which is the youth fishing culture shift formed around my content, my storytelling, and the community that grew from it."
Ironically, I never claimed #FishTok but it was the community itself and TikTok that identified my impact which culminated in the first online to real world event of it's kind for Australia.
